Calllisto is a broadcast specification (SMPTE-259M) 8-input 270Mbit video switcher and DSK designed for studio, edit suite and transmission applications. Callisto can handle fully asynchronous (unlocked) in a mixed signal format (SDI and analogue) environment.

The programme and preview outputs are simultaneously available as both SDI and analogue composite, the latter being intended for monitoring. In addition, there are two switched auxiliary outputs for further SDI monitoring and routing. The incoming sources can be fully unlocked as Callisto features dual channel framestore synchronisers. The switcher will operate in stand-alone mode, or may be genlocked to an external reference.

Operationally, the switcher works in conventional programme/preview bus mode. Installed functions include manual and auto wipe (multiple patterns with normal/reverse, colour border and soft edge), manual and auto dissolve, and auto fade to black. Callisto is dual standard 525/625 and offers 4:3 or 16:9 (letterbox) operation. Embedded audio and VITC are stripped and stored during processing for later reinsertion if required. The model shown (Callisto-R) is designed to be used in conjunction with the Callisto-C control panel, which allows the user to tailor the operational modes and functions to suit individual requirements. At the same time, an internal TSG provides EBU bars and other test signals, and source identification can be inserted.

Callisto also features a DSK with fully synchronising SDI inputs for external 'Key' and 'Fill'. Optional analogue composite decoders allow signal acquisition in mixed format environments (SDI digital and analogue) without compromising any of the unit's other features, and use of the "shift" key allows the operator to switch signal formats between transitions, thus making Callisto in effect, a 16-input switcher when fitted with the composite input option. This allows the switcher to be used efficiently in today's transitional environment while retaining the necessary specifications and features for the all-digital world of tomorrow.The rack-mount unit can also be controlled via an industry standard editor protocol or GPI.
